Travel: Jember, The Indonesian Carnival Center

Jember has been famous internationally for its carnival, Jember Fashion Carnaval. Unfortunately I visited this regency last month on June when the event doesn’t take place.

The regency is in East Java and it is written in Wikipedia as the third most populated area in the province after Surabaya and Malang. As the third most populated area in East Java, I think Jember is still a calm city.

Since I only got a chance for strolling around in three days while working then here’s the wrap up of place that you too can visit in downtown area of Jember.

Transportation
Blessed Garuda Indonesia for opening route from Surabaya to Jember and vice versa in 2014, otherwise I have to take four to six hours on the road to reach the regency. Garuda using its sub-brand Garuda Explore of ATR 72-600 fleet manufactured in France-Italy that can accommodate 70 passengers. The flight can take you to Notohadinegoro Airport of Jember with only around 30 minutes from Surabaya. Almost all seats we’re occupied and Explore offers service as good as Garuda.

Once you arrived, there are taxis lining up ready to take you up to the hotel or other more reliable choice is Damri shuttle. It can take you to the destined hotel with Rp30.000 charge. It is quite expensive actually compare to Blok M – Soetta Airport Damri bus which only charged Rp40.000 included toll fee.

If you stay by the downtown area it’s not hard strolling around the city. It is advisable to take public transportation (angkot) rather than taxis because if the distance is too close they will charge minimum payment of Rp30.000 – Rp35.000.

Since all angkot are in yellow then it is differentiated by alphabetical lines. There are seven lines (A-E and G-H) of angkot each with different routes. Check this www.jembertourism.com/informasi/transportasi/angkot.

And when it’s time to go back home, several hotels cooperate with Warna Tour to pick you up and take you back to Notohadinegoro Airport for Rp35.000.

Accommodation
I chose Ebizz budget hotel near Jember University in Kalimantan road. Single room with breakfast but no toiletries and cabel tv cost for Rp225.000/nett. But if you want to have culinary tour it will be better to stay around Trunojoyo road like Hotel Istana where you can indulge for varied local food. Other lavish option is Aston hotel, the only big hotel chain in the town.

Cuisine
Like all the Main Square, it’s a spacious place where people can chit-chat in the park, skateboarding, exercising and of course finding food. So many food stalls lining with lesehan seats selling local temptations in the night such as rujak cingur, scallop skewers, pecel, and more. At the other side, there are also common street food such as seafood and satay.

After disappointed with the taste of local food near the hotel, I picked the safe choice of salted egg shrimp with white rice and ice tea that cost Rp55.000 which tasted too salty but far better than the food near Ebizz.

My Sumatran tongue can’t keep up with some taste of the food around hotel. It wasn’t peculiar local food either, just like wedang jahe and Padang dish but the flavor are just not right. When local food tastes so weird, then fast food has been always my best option. Aside KFC that is quite far from our hotel, there is Cbezt Fried Chicken in Kalimantan Street. During Ramadhan, it opens from afternoon until sahur. The price is way much cheaper and the chicken is so big which made me suspicious in what kind of chicken is it that they’re selling :p.

Founded in the 1st January 1911 and was named Besoekisch Proefstation, ICCRI offers tour to educate people more about the process to produce good quality coffee and chocolate in Indonesia. Tour to its manufactures should be by appointment and group tour is preferable. After finishing tour, visitor can buy processed chocolate and coffee in its shops.

Glovic Bakery @glovicbakery
Started by selling bread, Glovic has turned into a chic café that can satiate people’s appetite for desserts; ice cream, éclairs and cake. The store occupies spacious home office in A.Yani Street. What a complete selection of dessert for afternoon coffee or tea.

Tape Cake
Best cake with cassava tape ingredient! The tape isn’t sour, blended perfectly, garnished with cheese topping and smells good. I chose Prol Tape Purnama Jati in Trunojoyo Street. Bandung is also famous for its cassava tape but they don’t make it into prol like in Jember J.
