Movie Review: An Education, There’s No Shortcut to Your Dreams

'The life I want, there is no shortcut…'

"Studying is hard and boring" - Jenny Mellor (pluggedin.com)

In this temporary euphoria day called Education Day, a movie would be resonated to discuss. Scripted by a novelist Nick Hornby, An Education was adapted from an autobiography of Lynn Barber. The movie itself released in 2009 with quite high rating from Rotentomatoes and IMDB.

Jenny Mellor is a bright free-spirited Briton girl who lives in Twickenham, the suburban of London. As the only child in the family and ruled by stiff parent, her life comprise of such boring and dull activities of studying to enter Oxford.

Her hobby playing cello is disgusted by her father, being musician isn’t worth his money. She even has to stop listening music and reading anything that have nothing to do with her education.
Jenny left school for older man (telegraph.co.uk)

In this dull life, she lure easily by an older man, David Goldman during her way home. With Bristol car and full of promises Jenny started follow him everywhere, to expensive painting auctions, fine restaurants, and bars. She begins tell lies to her parent that they will have rare chance to meet C.S Lewis, famous author so that her parents allowed them to spend nights out of town just to lose her virginity.

When David proposed, she asked her parents what they’re thinking. Surprisingly since her father think David is a mature and adequate man, suddenly education isn’t something important anymore. Furious at her father, she accepts the proposal.

When David treats her parents to go out of town, it turns out that he is just a playboy with whole bunch of lie. He’s married, has son and live just around the corner which make sense why they always bump up each other on the road at the first times. He even doesn’t have a proper job.

Jenny didn’t take exam, already left school and desperate when realize that many things she had left behind only to be with David.

This movie portrays what still happen in our life today. Parents that pushed their choice of study to children, count every penny that their spent for education, choose older rich man for their girls, and marriage as an assurance that they daughter will be looked after. All of these are in the hope that their children will live adequate.

The movie should make parents and girls contemplate on how they perceive life. It surely gives a thought that education matters for all girls and there is no shortcut to your dreams.

For those of you who familiar with British movies might easily recognized the Headmaster who plays by Emma Thompson (Professor Trelawney in Harry Potter, Serafina in Beautiful Creatures).

Other reasons that can draw my attention toward this movie is Director Lone Scherfig whom i known before has directed One Day (Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess), was also roled as a director in this movie.

Then, it sets in British school with that typical preppy uniform and castle building which i like very much. I don’t know why but boarding-school-like setting mostly draws my attention. Thirdly, Carey Mulligan who took part in Never Let Me Go, a film adapted from novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, along co-star Keira Knightly (Bend It Like Beckham) and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spiderman).

An Education is a movie that’s rare of its kind and I think this is what coming-of-age movie should be like for girls. (***)
