Jakarta, InfoPublik - Secretary-General of ASEAN, H. E. Le Luong Minh and Ambassador of India to Indonesia, ASEAN and Timor-Leste, H. E. Gurjit Singh jointly inaugurated Thursday (13/1) an exhibition on ‘Civilizational Links between India and Southeast Asian Nations’ based on archival material and contemporary photographs at the ASEAN Secretariat.
“In the backdrop of their fascinating landscapes and diverse ethnicities, both Southeast Asia and India are dynamic and fast growing economic regions. With their shared histories and cultures - straddling between tradition and modernity - they both make up probably two of the most fascinating regions in the world,” SG Minh said at the inauguration.
“I would like to invite everybody to take some time to see and enjoy these photographs. I hope that they will not only amaze us but also provoke both reflection and inspiration from us all,” he added.
H. E. Gurjit Singh, in turn, said that the Indian Embassy is indeed proud to cooperate with the Secretariat in putting together the exhibition, which illustrates the close friendship between the leaders of India and ASEAN countries over decades through 96 photographs that were displayed.
Highlighting some of the key developments in the relationship over the past one year, Ambassador Singh mentioned that the number of functional cooperation projects implemented by India annually has more than doubled in the last two years.
Over the next three years, India would be implementing projects worth more than USD40 million. Over 2,000 students, farmers, scientists, academics, experts, and journalists from ASEAN are invited by India annually through various programmes, implemented both bilaterally and under the ASEAN-India cooperation umbrella. Ambassador Singh also spoke about India’s desire to broaden the relationships across the three verticals of the ASEAN Community, i.e. political-security, economic and socio-cultural.
Furthermore, Ambassador Singh also emphasized that the relations between India and ASEAN has been in positive progress since ASEAN+1 and East Asia Summit meeting continued by Prime Minister of India to visit ASEAN last year.
This stronger relationship is not just between the head of states but also in senior officials as well as among its people. The joint cultural program between ASEAN and India has been initiated in 2012 with cultural night program held also in ASEAN Secretariat and this photo exhibition as the result of its commitment to hold cultural exchanges activities annually.
The function was attended by Rahmat Pramono, Indonesia Permanent Representative to ASEAN, Ambassadors, representatives of the Diplomatic Community, Jakarta-based regional and international organisations, Secretariat officials, exhibition enthusiasts and media.
The exhibition was organised by the Indian Embassy in partnership with the Jawaharlal Nehru Indian Cultural Centre (JNICC), Jakarta and the ASEAN Secretariat. The inaugural function also featured a short cultural performance.
